ArchiMaster vs Sweet Home 3D: 2026 Bathroom Remodel Test

Sweet Home 3D, a free open-source planner, can block out a room and place generic objects, but it requires manual workarounds for the dimension and tile details that decide whether a bathroom actually fits. In this hands-on test I planned the same 5-by-8-foot bathroom in both programs, using a 30-inch vanity, a 60-inch alcove tub, a 24-inch door swing, and 12-by-24-inch wall tile. The goal was not to see which software runs, but which one catches layout mistakes before the tile saw starts. If you want a quick sketch, both work. If you want a remodel plan that survives contact with a contractor, ArchiMaster 3D home design software is the one to reach for.

The Test: A 5-by-8 Foot Bathroom Remodel

I used a common guest bathroom footprint: 5 feet wide by 8 feet deep, with the door on the short wall, a 30-inch vanity on the left long wall, a standard toilet next to it, and a 60-inch alcove tub across the back wall. Wall tile runs from floor to a 48-inch wainscot height, using 12-by-24-inch porcelain tile with a 33% offset. I set the same targets in both programs: draw the shell, enter the exact dimensions, place the vanity and toilet, apply the tile pattern, and produce three camera views for a client. The comparison focused on four jobs that matter more than rendering speed: dimension accuracy, tile repetition, fixture clearance, and visual communication. A bathroom this small has almost no room for error; a half-inch miscalculation can turn a standard tub into a custom cut.

Precise Dimensions: Where the Two Tools Separate

ArchiMaster 3D starts with a proper wall tool: I clicked a corner, typed 60.0 inches for the short wall and 96.0 inches for the long wall, and the program kept those dimensions locked while I placed doors and windows. Fixture placement accepts an absolute offset, so I put the vanity 18.0 inches from the side wall and the toilet center 15.0 inches from the vanity edge. Sweet Home 3D also accepts wall length input, but its object placement feels less committed to numbers. In my test the vanity floated 0.4 inches off the intended line after I nudged it with the mouse, and I had to zoom in to correct it. That drift seems harmless on screen, but it changes the measurement from the toilet center to the vanity, which code inspectors and plumbers check.

Door swing clearance

The 24-inch bathroom door became the first real test of clearance. ArchiMaster 3D let me model the door leaf and swing path, and I could see whether the open door hit the vanity or tub. Sweet Home 3D shows a door object, but I had to infer the swing clearance from the 2D plan and approximate the arc. In a 5-foot-wide room, a door that swings into a 30-inch vanity can make the entry feel cramped even if it technically clears. ArchiMaster made that conflict visible in the 3D view before I sent anything to a client. This is a specific, often-missed clearance check that separates a remodel plan from a sketch.

Wall Tile Layout: Real Patterns vs Stretched Textures

The biggest practical difference showed up on the wall behind the tub. In ArchiMaster 3D I applied a tile material as a repeatable pattern, set the module to 12 by 24 inches, chose a 33% offset, and the plan view showed actual tile boundaries including grout lines. Sweet Home 3D required me to import a texture image, then stretch it across the wall with the mouse. The texture looked like tile, but it did not correspond to the physical tile count. On a 60-inch wall, five 12-inch tiles plus four 1/8-inch grout joints total 60.5 inches, not 60.0. That half inch is exactly where a sliver cut appears, and stretched textures hide it.

Grout line and sliver cuts

When a tile pattern repeats at true size, the software can show where a full tile ends and a cut begins. ArchiMaster 3D does this in the 2D elevation view, so I knew immediately that the back wall would need a 0.5-inch sliver at one edge. Sweet Home 3D does not calculate tile count from the texture, so I had to do the math by hand. This matters because a sliver cut is visibly wrong in real life, and moving the layout by half a tile would avoid it. For a small bathroom, the ability to shift the tile origin and see the result as actual tile boundaries saves a second trip to the supplier.

Fixture Clearance and Building Code Visibility

The International Residential Code calls for 15 inches from a toilet centerline to any side wall or obstruction, and 21 inches of clear space in front of the toilet. In a 5-foot-wide bathroom, a 30-inch vanity plus a toilet can eat that clearance fast. ArchiMaster 3D let me set the toilet centerline at exactly 15.0 inches from the vanity and 15.0 inches from the opposite wall, then view the space in plan. Sweet Home 3D does not automatically flag clearance violations, so I had to place a measurement line manually. Even then, the 3D camera did not show the clearance in a way a client could read at a glance. This is the difference between a plan that passes inspection and one that fails on the first walkthrough.

  • Toilet side clearance: 15 inches minimum from centerline to any side wall or fixture, per the International Residential Code.
  • Clear space in front of toilet: 21 inches minimum from the front edge of the bowl to any opposite wall or vanity.
  • Vanity to door swing: leave at least the door width plus 2 inches of clearance so the door does not hit the vanity.
  • Tub surround: allow a 1/8-inch expansion gap at tile edges against tub and walls, which true-to-scale tile layout reveals.

Client-Ready Views and Photorealism

ArchiMaster 3D's features include a built-in photoreal renderer, so the same model that held my exact dimensions produced a shaded view with realistic light from the fixture and window. I could send a client three images: the view from the doorway, the tub wall tile pattern, and the vanity corner with the door swing. Sweet Home 3D offers a 3D view and an aerial render, but its default lighting is flat, and achieving a photoreal look requires third-party renderers or manual texture work. For a bathroom remodel, clients often struggle to read a 2D floor plan. A photoreal view with true dimensions behind it answers the real question: will this room feel open and finished? Sweet Home 3D is free, which is its strongest argument. For a rough sketch of where furniture might go, it works. The paid version of Sweet Home 3D adds a few features but still leaves dimension and material work to the user. ArchiMaster 3D is a one-time license product with a pricing structure across editions, and for a homeowner planning one or two remodels, the cost is small compared with a wrong tile order or a reworked vanity layout. The real value is not the rendering; it is the correction of mistakes that would show up only after the contractor measures. If you want a free first pass, use Sweet Home 3D. If you want a plan a contractor can build from, use ArchiMaster 3D.

For a rough layout, yes. Sweet Home 3D can place a tub, toilet, vanity, and door in a floor plan. But it lacks true tile patterning, automatic clearance checking, and photoreal rendering.
