The two clearances that govern a ground-level deck fire pit

Fire pit clearance rules come down to two measurements: horizontal separation from combustibles and the noncombustible hardscape zone under and around the bowl. For a ground-level wood deck, combustibles include the deck boards, joists, the house wall, a fence, and even a patio chair. Many manufactured gas fire pit manuals specify a minimum 10 foot clearance from structures and 24 to 36 inches from the bowl to any combustible surface, while open wood burning fire pits often fall under a local recreational fire rule that requires 25 feet from structures. Always check your local building department and the fire pit manufacturer first, but design to the stricter dimension so the plan passes the first time.

Horizontal clearance to the house and structures

Measure from the edge of the fire bowl, not the edge of the deck. In a freestanding deck plan, this typically means the fire pit sits on a separate stone or concrete pad at least 10 feet from the house, and often 25 feet for a wood fire. Noncombustible pad and overhead zone

Block out the deck and fire pit zone in ArchiMaster 3D

Set the deck elevation and ground height

Ground-level decks are usually 8 to 24 inches above grade, low enough that a step is optional but high enough for airflow under the joists. A flat plan can hide the clearance that fails inspection. Fire and heat rise, so the true clearance envelope around a fire pit is a vertical cylinder: the circle on the ground extends up to any overhead object. Fire pit on the deck or beside it: a freestanding deck plan comparison

Freestanding ground-level decks give you a choice that attached decks do not: you can place the fire pit on the wood deck, or you can leave the deck for seating and put the fire pit on its own paver terrace beside it. For most wood decks, the beside-the-deck option is safer, easier to drain, and simpler to permit. A fire pit set into a wood deck needs a noncombustible pad, an air gap or insulated barrier, and enough framing reinforcement to prevent bounce, while a fire pit on grade needs only the stone pad and clearance.

In the final pass, switch to board layout mode and set the direction and spacing. The lumber list then includes only the deck framing, not the paver base, so you can take separate quotes for the hardscape work.

Check the model before you build

Before exporting plans, do one orbit at eye level from the house to the fire pit. You are checking for three things: the 10 to 25 foot house clearance, the noncombustible pad extension, and the overhead cylinder. Then check a top-down view for the walking path and seating ring. A seating ring of chairs works at 5 to 8 feet from the bowl, but the chairs are combustible, so keep them outside the ember zone unless the fire pit manual says otherwise.
