To trace a 2D floor plan into 3D in ArchiMaster 3D, import the plan image as an underlay, calibrate scale against the longest known dimension, trace walls with the Wall tool, and set each wall's height and thickness. That workflow converts a builder PDF, a real estate sketch, or a hand-drawn renovation plan into an editable 3D shell in about 45 to 60 minutes. The trace tool is not a one-click converter. You redraw the plan digitally while the image stays underneath as a true-scale reference. This deliberate step lets you correct skewed scans, work around imprecise sketches, and produce a model that respects actual clearances. Once the shell is traced, ArchiMaster 3D applies consistent wall heights and lets you place doors, windows, and openings in the same pass.

What You Need Before You Start

The import tool works best with a floor plan that has at least one written dimension or a dimensioned scale bar. A crisp scan or PNG export at 200 to 300 DPI keeps line edges clean enough to trace without zooming into pixel mush. ArchiMaster 3D accepts common image formats directly. If your plan is a multi-page PDF, export the relevant page as a PNG or JPG first. You do not need a CAD file. A phone photo of a hand sketch can work, but it introduces perspective skew and usually needs a straighten pass before tracing. The import and wall tools are available across all ArchiMaster 3D editions, so the same workflow applies whether you are modeling a kitchen remodel, a full floor plan, or a landscape hardscape.

Step 1: Import and Calibrate the Floor Plan Image

Open ArchiMaster 3D, start a new project, and choose the import image command from the floor plan tool set. Place the image on the working plane, then lock the layer. Locking matters more than it seems. A small accidental drag while tracing can shift every subsequent wall by the same offset, and the error compounds into rooms that are all slightly too long in one direction. With the image locked, open the scale calibration tool. Click two points on the plan that correspond to a known measurement, type the real-world distance, and confirm the units. ArchiMaster 3D then sets the drawing scale so that the measured segment matches the physical dimension. Use the longest dimension you trust.

Why the longest dimension wins

A 6-inch error over a 30-foot exterior wall is a 1.7 percent scale error. The same 6 inches over a 3-foot door opening is a 16.7 percent error. Calibrating to the long wall keeps the model within a fraction of an inch per foot. If the plan has an overall width marked 28 feet 6 inches, use that before any individual room dimension. Rounded dimension labels can still be off by half an inch, but a large reference spreads that uncertainty across the whole plan instead of concentrating it in one small space.

Step 2: Trace the Walls in a Logical Order

Start with the exterior perimeter. Tracing the outside shell first locks the building footprint and gives interior walls a boundary to meet. Then draw interior partitions from one side of the shell to the other. In ArchiMaster 3D, the Wall tool snaps to the underlay when snapping is enabled, but you still control the click order. Trace walls centerline-to-centerline if the plan dimensions include wall thickness in the room sizes. Trace exterior face to interior face if the dimensions are clear interior room dimensions. Most real estate plans mix both, so pick one convention and stay consistent. Inconsistent wall centerlines create tiny gaps at corners that later show up as light leaks or misaligned crown molding in a render.

When to use centerline vs face tracing

Centerline tracing is faster when wall thickness is uniform, because every room dimension measures from the middle of the wall and ignores the thickness. Face tracing is more accurate when the plan labels clear interior room dimensions, because the wall's inside face is the dimension you walk through. ArchiMaster 3D lets you set a default wall thickness before you start, so the traced wall knows how far its faces sit from the centerline. If you change the thickness later, all walls update at once, which is a good reason to finish the full shell before fine-tuning one partition.

Step 3: Set Heights, Thickness, and Fix Alignment Drift

After the walls are roughed in, select the whole shell and set the default wall height for the level. Most residential plans use 8 feet 1 inch or 9 feet for framed interiors. Height is not guessed from the plan, the image only carries the footprint. Wall height becomes the floor-to-ceiling clearance you will see in every 3D view. Use the thickness field next. For interior partitions, 4.5 inches for a 2x4 stud with drywall or 6.5 inches for a 2x6 wall is typical. Exterior walls are thicker, often 8 to 12 inches once sheathing, insulation, and siding are counted. Set exterior and interior defaults separately, then override any wall that differs.

Catching drift in the first three walls

After tracing the first three walls, compare the on-screen length of each wall to the plan's written dimension. If the first wall is off by 3 inches, the calibration is wrong, not the wall. If the second and third walls are wrong by different amounts, the image is likely skewed or the underlay shifted. Correct the scale before tracing more. The longer you trace with a bad scale, the more demolition and redraw work you create. A quick three-wall check takes one minute and prevents a full-shell rebuild.

Step 4: Add Doors, Windows, and Openings While the Shell Is Fresh

Insert doors and windows immediately after the shell passes the three-wall check, while the wall segments are still easy to select. In ArchiMaster 3D, the door and window tools snap along wall lengths and include common sizes you can edit. Set the opening width, height, and sill height from the plan's schedule or standard sizes. A 3-foot interior door is 36 inches, an entry door is often 36 inches by 80 inches, and a double-hung window can start at 32 inches off the floor. Do not place openings before the shell is fully traced. An opening on an unconnected wall segment creates a hole in a wall that may not join the rest of the model cleanly.

Common Mistakes That Waste an Hour

  • Calibrating to a short interior dimension instead of the overall width.
  • Tracing interior walls before locking the exterior shell.
  • Leaving the image layer unlocked and dragging it with a stray click.
  • Mixing centerline and face tracing within the same floor plan.
  • Setting wall height after adding windows, which forces rechecking every sill and header.
  • Using a low-resolution photo with blurred edges for a house-scale plan.
Common questions
Can ArchiMaster 3D automatically convert a floor plan image into 3D?
No. ArchiMaster 3D uses the image as a scaled underlay for manual tracing, not as an automatic converter. This is intentional. The manual trace lets you repair skewed scans, ignore dimension labels, and choose accurate wall thicknesses instead of inheriting whoever drew the original. The result is a cleaner model than an OCR-style conversion, and the trace itself takes less than an hour for a typical single-level floor plan.
What image formats can I import into ArchiMaster 3D?
Common formats including JPG, PNG, BMP, and TIFF import directly. If your floor plan is in a PDF, export the page to PNG or JPG first. A resolution of 200 to 300 DPI is enough for crisp wall edges. Very large images can slow the underlay performance, so crop borders and blank margins before import.
Why is my traced floor plan the wrong size?
The most common cause is calibrating the scale against a short measurement or a rounded dimension label. Recalibrate using the longest known dimension on the plan, such as an exterior wall or overall width. Confirm that the project units match the image, feet and inches versus meters, for example. Then run the three-wall check before re-tracing.
Can I trace a hand-drawn sketch from a phone photo?
Yes, but the photo should be taken straight down from directly above the sketch to limit perspective skew.
