Start with the traffic path, not the storage. A back-to-school mudroom for two or three kids needs a clear aisle at least 36 inches wide when the bench and cubbies are in place. Place the bench first: 15 to 18 inches deep and 18 inches high. Then add cubbies above or beside it at 12 inches deep, with hooks at 60 to 66 inches above the floor so an elementary-school child can reach them.
